2019 Complex Active and Adaptive Material Systems Gordon Research Conference and Gordon Research Seminar. Research Area 1.b.iii.2 Engineering Sciences/Material Sciences/Mechanical Behavior

Abstract

The Gordon Research Conference on Complex Active and Adaptive Material Systems will build a uniquely cross-disciplinary community of researchers, with the common aim of exploiting the power and complexity of non-equilibrium systems to forge a new generation of functional materials and soft machines that can self-assemble and adapt in response to their environment. The objective of this year s meeting is to bring together physicists, chemists and material researchers at the forefront of soft matter science to discuss novel routes for capitalizing on the rich properties of soft and biological materials. With engineers and technologists from academia and industry, we will exchange our perspectives on employing advanced materials for soft robotics, sensors, smart materials and adaptive surfaces. The method to achieve this objective is the GRC conference series. By showcasing the best fundamental science, we will facilitate the application of new ideas in cutting edge applications. The wide-ranging and self-critical discussions that are a hallmark of GRCs will address the barriers to practical applications of exotic and complex materials. Scientists working on modem material design will gain a wide appreciation of what is required for real-world progress towards a new generation of smart machines that, by operating out of equilibrium, can sense and respond to their surroundings in ways not possible in traditional systems. This community and technology related to active and adaptive materials will forward research interests and campaigns of the Army, such as increasing functionality, lethality and survivability of soldiers and ground systems. Furthermore it will contribute to the enhancement and improvement of scientific, engineering, and/or educational in general and activities as outlined in the research areas of ARO w91 INF-17-S-002 BAA, including Research Area l.b.iii.2 in Engineering Sciences Division (Material Sciences/Mechanical Behavior), and Chemical Sciences Division (Polymer Chemistry, Complex Adaptive Polymeric Systems, Molecular Structure and Dynamics, Reactive Chemical Systems).
