Enhancing Research in the Solar-Terrestrial Environment at New Mexico State University
Abstract
The proposal entitled Enhancing Research in the Solar-Terrestrial Environment at New Mexico State University addresses basic research questions relevant to the Air Force Office of Scientific Research s Space Science program. This proposal requests funding to apply new analysis techniques to a recently released database consisting of 16 years of radiation measurements recorded by the Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites. The GPS constellation is operated and maintained by the U.S. Air Force, with the data residing at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The goals of the analysis efforts focus on improving the Nation s Space Weather Prediction capabilities to protect human and technology assets. This program will expand the current scope of both basic research in Space Weather and academic programs in Space Weather at New Mexico State University (NMSU). This will be accomplished through the development of undergraduate course content, research projects to support the newly developed Astronomy Minor for Engineers and Engineering Capstone design projects. Outstanding students from these programs will be recruited with funded Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) positions to continue their Space Weather research projects. In addition to the GRA stipends for the academic year, these students will be given the opportunity to participate in summer internships at LANL or the Air Force Research Laboratory s (AFRL) facility at Kirkland Air Force Base. During these internships, students will work with Laboratory experts on a related Space Weather project. The investigators on this proposal all have experience in Space Weather research and successful records of recruiting highly qualified and diverse students to pursue graduate degrees.
