AIHEC/DOD TCU Partnerships in Research and Education Project (TCU-PREP)
Abstract
The AIHEC/DOD TCU-Partnerships in Research and Education Project will establish an outreach, recruitment and support program to recruit faculty and students from the nationÕs 37 Tribal Colleges and Universities to the DOD summer research fellowship program and facilitate sustained TCU/DOD partnerships that will improve the overall capacity of TCUs to prepare students to transition to STEM advanced degree programs and STEM careers. The goal of the AIHEC/DOD TCU-PREP project is to strengthen and expand the STEM career pathway for students at the nationÕs 37 Tribal Colleges and universities through research and education opportunities involving DOD research scientists, engineers and facilities. The AIHEC STEM coordinator conducts a comprehensive outreach strategy involving email blasts to all TCU STEM faculty, informational webinars, and one-on-one discussions with interested faculty. DoD HBCU/MI Education Outreach staff facilitate connections between TCU applicants and DoD researchers to find an optimal fit between researchers and TCU fellows in terms of research needs, interests and skills. Project objectives include: a) recruitment of up to 10 teams (each team comprising one TCU faculty member and one student) to participate in the DOD faculty and student research fellowship program; b) facilitation of mentoring relationships between DOD research scientists and engineers and TCU students; c) facilitation of sustained research and education collaborations between DOD research scientists and engineers and TCU faculty. The TCU-PREP project represents an important opportunity for AI/AN students and STEM educators and researchers at TCUs. The project establishes DOD research centers as viable options for AI/AN students interested in pursuing a STEM research career, and therefore represents an important vehicle for bringing more AI/AN scientists and engineers into the DOD research community.
