Support for Activities of The National Research Council s Board on Human-Systems Integration (BOHSI)

Abstract

The Board on Human-Systems Integration (BOHSI) is a board of the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education (DBASSE) at the National Academies. It is sponsored by a coordinated consortium of several federal agencies. The Army Research Laboratory (ARL) has been a leading member of this consortium since 1986. The BoardÕs purpose is to provide the Government with proactive and reactive policy advice based on a human-systems integration approach. Special activities are conducted at committee meetings and workshops on topics identified by sponsoring agencies. The National Academies is a private, non-profit organization that provides independent and impartial advice to Congress and the federal Government. It has been chartered by Congress to do so. Given the reputation of the National Academies, it is able to attract world-renowned experts to serve as volunteers on its boards and committees. Funding for the Board supports its biannual meetings, planning seminars, a small staff, and operating activities related to developing and overseeing projects and activities. The Board develops proposals and workshops in response to requests from sponsor representatives and other government agencies. The Board also advances the field of human-systems integration (HSI) proactively exploring topics that the Board believes are of long-term importance to the discipline and/or the nation. In every case, the Board provides guidance and oversight for the activities of its consensus and workshop planning committees. The Board currently provides oversight for the ad hoc Consensus Committee on Facilities Staffing Requirements for Veterans Health Administration and The Human Factors of Process Safety and Worker Empowerment in the Offshore Oil Industry: A Workshop activity. BOHSI is currently composed of 15 experts in a variety of scientific disciplines related to human-systems integration research and applications. The Board typically meets twice a year. The spring meeting was held on June 18-19, 2018 at the National AcademiesÕ Keck Center in Washington DC. The second 2018 biannual meeting is scheduled to take place on November 12, 2018 also at the Keck Center. Representatives from ARL are invited to attend BOHSI meetings and participate in discussions. The purpose of the meetings is to discuss cutting-edge areas of research with sponsors, to develop and determine projects for BOHSI to undertake, to ensure that the HSI perspective is included in the federal agenda, and to coordinate work on committees already underway under the auspices of BOHSI.
