Electric Field Enhanced Processing of Advanced Materials II Conference
Abstract
This ECI conference is the second in the series on Field Assisted Processing of Materials. The first, which was held in the same location at about the same time, three years ago, was considered to be successful with approximately eighty participants many of whom were young scientists. It led to new collaborations and seeded new ideas in this emerging field. Perhaps as a result of that first conference, two large, multi-institutional, multi-year projects in field assisted processing have been founded, one in Germany and the other in Japan. The leaders of those Centers are the Co-Chairs for this Tomar-2019 meeting. Several recent developments warrant this second conference. (i) Synthesis of the three modes of field assisted processing, two widely practiced, SPS and Microwave, and the third more recent, Flash, are leading to a general understanding of these processes. (ii) The work has expanded from ultrafast sintering to phase transformations, and enhancement in properties relative to conventional processing. (iii) There is emerging interest in its application to manufacturing science. (iv) Atomistic calculations are starting to deepen the fundamental understanding of mechanism(s). And finally, the work on field assisted processing is expanding rapidly and this is an opportune time to build a cohesive community which will endure. The funds to support this meeting are requested to especially support young scientists, new recruits, and especially, to bring in senior scientists from adjacent fields who will add intellectual vigor and excitement to the field. Complex computations, sensor engineering, real time feedback control, theoretical physics, and electrochemistry are examples of areas that underpin the interdisciplinary nature of research in field assisted processing.
