Workshop on Identifying Mathematical Challenges Associated with Dynamic Failure of Brittle Materials

Abstract

We are requesting $24,605 in funding to support a workshop on Identifying Mathematical Challenges Associated with Failure of Brittle Materials. This workshop is being proposed by Assistant Professor Ryan C. Hurley of the Johns Hopkins University, Assistant Professor James Hogan of the University of Alberta and Professor Surya Kalidindi of the Georgia Institute of Technology, and will be hosted at the Johns Hopkins University in July or August of 2019. The workshop will take place over 1.5 days and will bring a diverse group of mathematicians and statisticians together with a group of researchers with expertise in brittle failure. Through presentations, panel discussions, posters, and surveys, the workshop will provide a forum for discussion of ideas from both communities in order to identify new mathematical and statistical tools that may be leveraged to overcome bottlenecks in the current research paradigms surrounding brittle fracture. The ideas generated during through workshop will be shared with government, industry, and academia through a technical report to facilitate implementation in analysis and material processing designs.
