W911NF-18-S-0001 Domain 3 Organizational Effectiveness Optimizing Team Composition: Theoretical and Computational Advancements

Abstract

Teams have widely become accepted as the basic building blocks of modern-day organizations. Recent meta-analyses and qualitative reviews have confirmed that team composition plays a vital role in team effectiveness. However, several needs must be addressed to understand how to best combine individualsÕ knowledges, skills, abilities, and other characteristics to optimize team effectiveness over time. There is clearly a need for a more integrated theory of team composition that incorporates temporal considerations as related to different types of team staffing decisions. There is also a need to explore and refine more advanced predictive models of compositional effects, deploying methods (e.g., machine learning, neural networks) that go beyond traditional linear regression-based techniques. And most importantly, there is a need to develop sophisticated optimization routines (e.g., decision diagram-based algorithms) to overcome computational limitations and exploit the predictive models in a timely and accessible fashion, allowing for the practical application of team composition research to support Army staffing needs. Finally, there is the need to apply the advanced theory, predictive models, and optimization routines to more complex team staffing decisions. We have assembled a multi-disciplinary team of scholars who can address these needs, and propose a program of research to develop, test, and apply these techniques using data from three different types of teams and several types of staffing decisions. This effort should offer fundamental insights about team composition Ð effectiveness relationships as well as provide the foundational methods needed to develop future team staffing tools and decision aids.
