Promoting Informal Self-Regulated Learning: A Multi-Level Approach

Abstract

Informal learning is a core process by which Army personnel can develop or adapt skills to meet the challenges of a dynamic environment, yet it is not well understood at the theoretical level and is lacking in rigorous empirical research. In this grant application we propose a new theoretical perspective and present a Multi-level Model of Self-Regulated Informal Learning that incorporates guidance on multi-level theory development and self-regulation theory to extend and deepen our understanding of the informal learning process. We propose two tasks to further refine and validate our theoretical model. Task 1 involves a systematic literature review of existing research on informal learning and the collection of critical incidents from working adults in order to identify the specific processes (i.e., behavior, cognition, attitudes) that characterize informal learning, and to assess the extent to which these processes are consistent with our theoretical model. The result of this effort will yield a taxonomy of informal learning processes at the individual and team level as well as a comprehensive and broadly applicable Informal Learning Process assessment tool for use in future research. Task 2 aims to provide validity evidence for our theoretical model and the assessment tool developed in Task 1 using a sample of adults working in team-based environments in a high-reliability organization. Task 2 also aims to examine inter-relationships between individual and team antecedents, informal learning processes, and outcomes. These results will contribute to research and practice by more clearly defining and assessing the specific behaviors, thoughts, and attitudes that characterize the informal learning process and extending this understanding and assessment from the individual to the team level so that future research and interventions may better support informal learning.
