2019 Atmospheric Chemistry Gordon Research Conference
Abstract
We request support for a portion of the operation costs for the 2019 Atmospheric Chemistry Gordon Research Conference (GRC) sub-titled New Science in Air Quality and Climate from Charney to AR6." The atmospheric chemistry GRC has a long and rich history with a tradition of excellence. It is the premier scientific conference in atmospheric chemistry, during which new ideas are formulated, discussed, challenged, and encouraged. For the 2019 atmospheric chemistry GRC, we are bringing together group of leading scientists from around the world with research focused on a diverse set of cutting-edge topics in atmospheric chemistry. Our objective is to promote exchange of information and ideas on topics of contemporary interest in atmospheric science. We have chosen leaders in the field to give formal presentations, starting with a Keynote session exploring connections between atmospheric chemistry and climate change. This will be followed by focused presentations addressing high-resolution urban scale chemistry, fundamental peroxy radical reactions, technological innovations on the cusp of application to atmospheric chemistry, air pollution and health, multiphase chemistry, new constraints on remote tropospheric chemistry, chemical fluxes and global biogeochemistry, and methane sources and chemistry. The intellectual exchange via formal presentations, the off-the-record exchanges from the floor, the discussions at the poster sessions, and the casual interactions outside the meeting room are unique to the Gordon Research Conference format. There is no similar conference in the U.S. in this field. It is held biennially and has been supported by a cross-section of federal agencies for many years. More than three quarters of the participants in the 2017 meeting rated it above average in four separate rating categories (science, discussion, management, atmosphere and suitability), making it a high performing" conference by GRC guidelines. Participants also frequently comment that the focused discussions and presentations on new results and new ideas in atmospheric science can influence the course of their research in the) ears following the conference, often reinforcing or changing their research directions, while speeding the progress of research and increasing efficiency. The meeting also routinely has a disproportionately high ratio of female attendees (40% and more) as well as speakers and discussion leaders (nearly 50% in 2017). Our goal is to continue this high level of quality and participant satisfaction in 2019. We calculate a Conference cos of $158.055 for the 2019 Atmospheric Chemistry GRC. These costs have historically been covered by a combination of federal and non-federal sources. These funds cover part or all of the travel and conference fees for the organizers, speakers, discussion leaders, new faculty and doctoral students who will attend the GRC. We are requesting $10,000 from ARO.
