RF Waveform Analysis at Virginia Tech

Abstract

The Hume Center for National Security and Technology (ÒHumeÓ) at Virginia Tech serves to integrate the educational objectives of the university with advanced research in support of our national defense partners. Key innovation areas at Hume include the use of software-defined platforms for a variety of missions; multi-function RF signal processing and waveform design supporting DoD communications, electronic warfare, RADAR, SIGINT, and PNT; establishment of an academic SATCOM ground station; and a broadly-defined Electronic Systems (ES) research portfolio that leverages cleared student participation within HumeÕs secure facilities. Hume researchersÕ experience with and contributions to open standard communities like GNU Radio and Redhawk, hands-on hardware/software design for LPI/D secure waveforms, and operational experience deploying and using these reconfigurable platforms in DoD and IC missions. The ultimate goal at Hume is supporting the creation of new DoD / IC mission capabilities through sponsored TRL 2-6 research, while simultaneously preparing students to join the national defense workforce. This DURIP proposal requests funding for real time spectrum analysis test equipment for an ITAR cyber and electronic warfare radio frequency waveform analysis capability at the Hume Center in support of continued research in (1) multi-function reconfigurable RF systems and (2) hands-on minds-on laboratory experimentation for US Citizen students in areas of Electronic Warfare (EW) and cyber-physical systems security (CPSS) applications. Each of these capabilities support broader educational and research objectives within the DoD and IC, yet the proposed equipment is generally outside the purchasing capability of any individual DoD-sponsored research project at the Hume Center.
