Conference Support for the 2019 IEEE Data Science Workshop
Abstract
The main objective of this proposal is to request participant support for the plenary and tutorial speakers invited to the 2019 IEEE Data Science Workshop (DSW), which will take place in Minneapolis, MN, during June 2-5, 2019. The DSW is a recently established annual international conference of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS), that is organized and technically sponsored by the Big Data Special Interest Group (SIG) of the SPS. The purpose of the Big Data SIG is to promote within the broad Signal Processing community awareness of (and interest in) problems related to large amounts of data. As a core activity towards realizing this mission, the DSW is devoted to dissemination of exciting advances in data science theory and its inherently cross-disciplinary applications. Ultimately, the vision is to further promote and leverage a Big Data research and development enterprise that will positively impact the society, economy, homeland security, and healthcare, along with consequent improvements in quality of life. The 2019 IEEE DSW will gather researchers and practitioners from a gamut of data-driven disciplines, including learning, data mining, signal processing, optimization, statistics, network science, and computing, along with experts from Academia, Government, and Industry groups with interests on fundamentals and applications, as diverse as agriculture, personalized health and medicine, defense and security, biology and physics, grid analytics, earth and the environment, education, finance and economics. This premier international event will feature six plenary talks and two half-day tutorials from world s leading academic and industry data science researchers, and a panel discussion on the opportunities for leveraging Big Data analytics research and development towards solving some of the nation s most pressing challenges. Six special focus sessions will complement the regular program with topics of emerging interest that are in line with the data science theme of this workshop and the research topics of this Broad Agency Announcement (BAA). All in all, the 2019 IEEE DSW will offer the opportunity to its participants for sharing of scientific discoveries related to various aspects of data science theory and applications. It will also contribute to the preparation of the next cadre of data-analytic professionals to advance future-generation information technologies, communication services, distributed sensing platforms, intelligent defense systems, smart cities, IoT technologies, and autonomous, self-healing, reconfigurable energy distribution networks.
