Increasing Student Participation at the 2019 NetSci Conference

Abstract

The Vermont Complex Systems Center is hosting the NetSci 2019 international conference at the University of Vermont from May 27th-31st 2019. The NetSci conference is the flagship event of the Network Science Society and the foremost conference on the topic of complex networks. It brings together an international and multidisciplinary audience of physicists, mathematicians, computer scientists, neuroscientists, anthropologists, biologists, ecologists and sociologists. The main topics of the conference typically deal with the theoretical foundation of network science, inference and communication problems in social networks, robustness and resilience of infrastructure and ecological networks, as well as the development of new methods for efficient routing and management of networked systems. In an effort to reach a diverse audience, the event has historically been alternating between continents, with recent editions in Paris (2018), Indianapolis (2017) and Seoul (2016). NetSci is now coming back to New England for the first time since 2010. This proposal therefore requests funds to increase student participation in the conference by offering registration fee waivers to American PhD students who might also be facing significant travels costs. The organizers of the conference will personally manage the program and review waiver applications. Priority will be given to American students from outside of the New England area, and to students from underrepresented groups. In an effort to make NetSci 2019 a welcoming conference for young scientists, students from diverse cultural backgrounds and women in science, we are also organizing three unique events. (1) The Society of Young Network Scientists exists to support young and early-career network scientists as they pursue research, promote their work, and shape this evolving field. (2) The Women in Network Science meeting fosters opportunities for the education, employment, and career advancement of women in Network Science. (3) The Diversify NetSci satellite aims to identify and nurture diversity in our ranks and publications in Network Science. All participants sponsored by this award will be invited to join these meetings and will have any associated costs covered. Altogether, this award will increase the participation of American students at the conference and contribute to making NetSci 2019 a welcoming and inclusive event.
