14th International Symposium on Macrocyclic and Supramolecular Chemistry (ISMSC2019)

Abstract

In line with its previous editions, the 14th International Symposium on Macrocyclic and Supramolecular Chemistry (ISMSC2019, Lecce, Italy) represents the most important yearly event that allows the wide community of researchers belonging to this field to present their results and stimulate the development of exciting multidisciplinary and pioneering discussions at the forefront of Supramolecular Chemistry. This theme is particularly timely and significant as demonstrated by the award of the Nobel Prize 2016 in Chemistry to Jean-Pierre Sauvage, Sir James Fraser Stoddart, and Bernard L. Feringa for their design and production of molecular machines, which are based on molecular components held together by non-covalent interactions, i.e., Supramolecular Chemistry. The conference will involve participants coming from different research backgrounds, such as crystal engineering, small molecule recognition, polymer and nanoparticle self-assembly, peptide and proteins, and will offer a unique opportunity to demonstrate the intrinsic multidisciplinarity and potential of Supramolecular Chemistry. As such, the Symposium will stimulate discussions among the researchers attending the conference and will promote advances in some application fields of chemistry-based nanotechnology, with particular focus on the development of new functional materials for several applicative fields such as analytical chemistry, nanomedicine, biosensing, and electronics, among others. As for the conference outcomes and relevant results, the whole international chemistry community will benefit from a proactive environment that will stimulate discussion and contribute to the dissemination of the most relevant novelty elements in the supramolecular chemistry field. The relevance of this event is witnessed by the considerable number of participants that is expected (more than 600), and by the presence of several internationally renown speakers that will give an overview of the most relevant and impactful novelties that are being developed on the many topics associated with supramolecular chemistry. To quote some, ISMSC2019 speakers will include Sir Fraser Stoddard and Ben Feringa (2016 Nobel laureates in Chemistry), as well as many other top scientists from the most prestigious international universities. The scientific advancements discussed within the conference will be then shared with the international chemistry community through different modalities. For example, a special issue in the Taylor&Francis online scientific journal, Supramolecular Chemistry, will be edited and a meeting report will be submitted for publication in Chemistry International. It is worth mentioning that, moreover, the Nobel prize awardee 2016 Sir J. Fraser Stoddard will not only open the conference with a plenary lecture presenting the new challenges that Supramolecular Chemistry has to face and overcome, but also will give a lecture open to the high school students and to the general public explaining the societal impact of Supramolecular Chemistry. ISMSC2019 will be supported by many sponsoring organizations, mostly constituted by public Italian academic institutions, international chemical societies and scientific journal editors, plus technical sponsors.
