Optical Communication with Synthetic Cells

Abstract

This project aims to explore new technologies to communicate with autonomous microsystems smaller than 100 ?m (i.e. Synthetic Cells, or SynCells). Due to the small size of these microsystems, efficient far-field RF antennas cannot be integrated on them. As an alternative approach, we will investigate the potential of optical communications. First, an analytical study will be performed to understand the trade-offs between communication power budget and the system complexity in both the transmitter and receiver. Then, a simple prototype of such a communication link will be fabricated between a SynCell and an external base station.
