Energy Efficient/Optimal Exascale Accelerators

Abstract

This STIR (Short Term Innovative Research) project is an initial study in the context of a larger project whose aim is to develop an ecosystem for the design and deployment of domain specific hardware accelerators. In the exascale era, the primary performance objective has become energy, rather than just execution time (be it throughput or latency). In this context, domain specific hardware accelerators are a critical element. The long term vision of the ecosystem is that programmers and end users specify computations that are to be accelerated in a domain specific language just as easily as they would write conventional programs, and the ecosystem would map this to the accelerator. In the STIR project, we address accelerators like modern Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and plan to develop techniques for energy-efficient compilation to these platforms.
