Data Science Education and Sport: Equipping the DATA Bulls
Abstract
This project utilizes an interdisciplinary approach to attract undergraduate students from various backgrounds to STEM careers. The United States military has an increasing demand for uniformed and civilian personnel with data science or analytics expertise due to data enabled aspects of military operations that underpin the life-threatening decisions of its leaders. An ability to collect, analyze, and glean understanding from data is not only critical to the modern battlefield, but is in high demand across multiple industries. Yet women and minorities remain largely underrepresented in STEM fields. The goal of this project is to help meet the demand by increasing minority participation in data science education and research, enhancing the data-enabled capacity of sport-affiliated programs, and improving student and faculty access to quality data. The work uniquely pairs data science curriculum grounded in the real world with applied research experiences to build capacity using human performance, player tracking and sports team analytics equipment. The equipment will enhance collaborative capabilities and courses within the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Department of Health and Human Performance. Often, existing and publicly available data sets have already been thoroughly mined for innovative ideas by other students and researchers. The equipment will assist students and faculty in the creation of rich, real-world data sets and allow for the formation of new, interesting and complex research questions. This project will enhance STEM programs and research education capabilities through its support of the expansion of integrated, relevant, and engaging data science curriculum.
