Acquisition of a GPU Cluster for Network Science and Big Data Research and Education

Abstract

The objective of this proposal is to acquire a GPU cluster for big data in network science research and education at University of Arkansas (UA). GPU cluster will embrace the demonstrated power of graphical processing units (GPUs) at an unprecedented level, with the number of installed GPUs exceeding the number of CPU processors. This enables UA researchers to run big network/graph databases with hundreds of billions of edges. The proposed integrated high performance computing instrument will promote innovation and translational network science and big data research at UA. With its advanced network science, big data innovation strength and its long, productive history of collaborative research, UA is becoming a strong player in network science, big data research and education. The research groups involved in this proposal have been actively conducting research on network big data analytics that require such an instrument for mass data processing and storage. The GPU instrument will be a critical asset for the research groups involving network big data analysis and management. It will advance various network big data research and educational projects at UA. The instrument will have a significant and lasting broader impact on basic data science, provide new opportunities at UA, and facilitate the advancement of outstanding next-generation faculty members working across the disciplines.
