HBCU/MI: Acquisition of Atomic Layer Deposition System to Realize Advanced High Electrical Strength Materials for Extreme Environment Applications
Abstract
This proposal requests funds for the acquisition of an advanced atomic layer deposition (ALD) system to produce simple and complex electronic, optical and opto-electronic materials with a high structural and chemical quality, precision, sharp interfaces, uniform coverage over large areas, and enhanced functional device performance. The challenging problem currently facing the scientific and engineering community in this 21st century is the design, discovery and development of novel functional materials, which will have an impact on the next generation aerospace applications. In this context, this proposal, acquisition of an advanced atomic layer deposition system is proposed to fabricate complex oxide materials, which are critically important for high power and high frequency electronic devices. The ultimate goal of the project will be using the system to fabricate unique materials and understanding the interplay between processing conditions, structure and optical/electronic properties. The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is a minority-serving institution that will use the proposed modern, advanced ALD system extensively for research, teaching and outreach activities. The instrument will allow students, staff and faculty at UTEP to produce materials by ALD, which is not available within the UniversityĆs engineering or science programs at this time, and investigate a wide variety of materials with national and international collaborators. Furthermore, this new instrumentation will directly impact and educate the research of 25 undergraduates and 15 graduate students per year. The engineering/science courses will also take advantage of the new instrumentation impacting about 250 undergraduates and 25 graduate students per year.
