International Symposium on Clusters and Nanomaterials
Abstract
Virginia Commonwealth University proposes to hold an ÒInternational Symposium on Clusters and NanomaterialsÓ in Richmond, Virginia from November 3rd to 7th, 2019. The symposium, a continuation of The Richmond Symposium series, will focus on the roles that clusters and nanomaterials play in addressing the outstanding challenges and opportunities in clean and sustainable energy and medicine, two of the most important problems facing science and society. Many of the materials issues in sustainable energies, environmental impacts of energy technologies, and the beneficial and toxicity issues of nanoparticles in health are intertwined. Addressing both fundamental and applied materials issues requires a multidisciplinary approach. The objective of the Richmond Symposium is to provide such a forum by bringing together researchers from the fields of physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, and medicine to share their ideas and results, identify outstanding problems, and develop new collaborations. A special session will be held in honor of Will Castleman, Millie Dresselhaus, Walter Kohn, and John Yates who were notably associated with The Richmond Symposium series for many years and recently passed away. The symposium is interdisciplinary and focuses on the latest issues important to society. Additionally, the topics are of relevance to ARO research interests in the Chemical Sciences and Engineering Sciences directorates, as well as the ARL Materials Research Campaign. Traditionally the topics of energy, medicine, and materials are often kept separate. This is due, in part, to the fact that in cross-discipline energy/bio-sciences, researchers with different backgrounds and focus often speak different languages. The Richmond symposium will address, in a single forum, important issues in energy and medicine in an interdisciplinary manner. The symposium will provide an interactive environment where new ideas can be brought into focus and pursued by participants and speakers from academia, government laboratories, and industry. The oral sessions will include invited plenary talks as well as topics at the forefront of current research, which will be selected from submitted abstracts. To allow for in-depth, in-person conversations, two poster sessions will be held. Special effort will be made to promote the participation of graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and minority researchers. All invited talks will be posted on the conference website and papers presented will be published either as conference proceedings or in an archival journal to facilitate wide dissemination. Important scientific and technological problems and bottlenecks in energy and medicine will be identified, collaborations between multidisciplinary scientists will be fostered, and graduate students will be exposed to world leaders in the field, thus enhancing their education. Due to the convergence of topics in energy and medicine, new synergistic knowledge areas are likely to emerge.
