New Laboratory Capabilities

Abstract

New Laboratory Capabilities University of Rhode Island, Chemistry Jimmie Oxley & James Smith Projects undertaken by the University of Rhode Island (URI) Energetic Materials (EM) Laboratory often require extensive formulation. A number of steps are involved in this process, including grinding, mixing, and pressing. Each of these steps have inherent hazards which can be minimized by the use of proper equipment and protective measures. This proposal is for funding to purchase a specialized mixer, one that will promote thorough and safe mixing, yet not so violently mixing as to introduce voids. The request is for a mixer which can mix over 500 g of material and apply a vacuum to the mix to reduce the possibility of voids and inhomogeneities. This mixer is required immediately for an ongoing project involving the creation of cast-cure plastic-bonded explosives. It is also expected to be necessary on any project where preparation of consistent charges will be necessary.
