Increasing Student and Faculty from the US Participation at the 2020 NetSci Conference
Abstract
Boston University is co-organizing the NetSci 2020 international conference in Rome, Italy at University Sapienza from July 6 to July 10, 2020. This is the most important event for the community of Network Scientists and the flagship event of the Network Science Society. In the order of one thousand participants, it is by far the largest and most prestigious conference in this field. It brings together an international and multidisciplinary audience of scientists from computer science, biology, medicine, physics, and economics. The conference swings between Europe and America, with the last edition in Burlington (VT) 2019, Paris (2018) and Indianapolis in 2017. The topic of the conference is the theoretical foundation of network theory and the different applications that stem out from the different disciplines involved. In the history of the Network Science Foundation, US researchers play a major role in the development of this field. The aim of this proposal is to obtain support in order to increase participation by students and faculty from the US by both offering registration fee waivers to American graduate students and tho help US faculty to plan participation despite the fact that they might be facing significant travel costs. Following a long series of actions to make young researchers and students participate in the life of the conference, we have a series of events specifically suited for them that span even the week before the conference with the organization of a meeting called ÒComplexity72Ó and a course of scientific writing (where representatives from Journals of the American Physical Society will be present). We believe that thanks to this support we can increase the participation of American students and faculty at the NetSci 2020 conference and contribute to keeping the level of American research in this topic at a high level.
