Driven quantum systems: Landau-Zener-Stockelberg-Majorana physics
Abstract
Nature is quantum, and on mesoscopic scale this results in peculiar and useful properties of matter. The Principal Investigator studies quantum dynamic phenomena in mesoscopic systems, which include superconducting circuits, low-dimensional semiconductor-based structures, electrical and nanomechanical resonators. He makes use and develop the toolbox of modem condensed matter theory in order to sharpen understanding of quantum phenomena, which are nowadays available for probing and controlling. Such studies are useful for both deeper understanding of fundamental laws of physics, as they become apparent in mesoscopic systems, and also for the development of new applications in prospective future devices such as quantum computers. A basic system of quantum technologies is a quantum two-level system, a qubit. We project to study theoretically various driven quantum systems. For quantum dynamics, fundamental phenomena, such as Landau-Zener-Stilckelberg-Majorana (LZSM) transitions, arc crucial. This combines such quantum phenomena as non-adiabatic transitions, superposition, and interference. We arc going to develop theoretical description ofrealistic systems, charge and spin qubits including, as well as perspective devices, such as quantum heat engines. It is important to study topological aspects for LZSM physics. It is projected to prepare a series of research papers, both theoretical and in close collaboration with experimentalists, and systematize the results in the form of a review article. This is going to be closely related to the experimental works of the groups of Kcij i Ono (RIK EN. Japan) and Fernando M. Gonzalez-Zalba (Cambridge, UK), as well as with the theoretical group of Franco Nori (RlKEN, Japan and Univ. of Michigan, USA). The research group consists of PI and his graduate and undergraduate students, all based in Ukraine.
