Symposium on Stochastic Hybrid Systems and Applications

Abstract

This proposal presents our effort to organize a symposium devoted to stochastic hybrid systems, which is planned to be a two-and-half-day meeting. A hybrid system is a dynamic system that involves both continuous and discrete dynamic behavior. The distinct features of such a system include the coexistence of continuous dynamics and discrete events, and their interactions. A stochastic hybrid system is one that the continuous dynamics or discrete events or both are random processes. Our plan is to bring together researchers from multi-disciplinary communities in applied mathematics, applied probability, engineering, biology, ecology, and networked science, to review, and to substantially update the most recent progress. For broader impacts, it is planned to invite researchers from different areas covering a wide range of areas from theoretically oriented talks to application intensive presentations. The proposed symposium will cover important areas of research, which spend a spectrum of applied and theoretical areas. The topics will be well aligned with the mission and goals of ARO. The proposed symposium will encourage and facilitate interactions and collaborations among researchers from all related fields, and will be a timely meeting to kick off the ARO identified focused area of research, and to bring excitement to the interdisciplinary research community. As a result, the workshop will be a trend-setting conference. It will prove to be invaluable to the scientific community, will contribute to the subsequent development of stochastic hybrid systems, and will have broader impacts to a wide variety of inter-disciplinary fronts.
