Acquisition of Deep Learning Computing System to Enhance Research and Education at Alcorn State University
Abstract
With this award from the DOD Research and Education Program (HBCU/MI) Equipment/Instrumentation, Alcorn State University (ASU) will acquire a deep learning computing system, which comprises of a deep learning server, a drone with dual cameras and a laptop computer. The acquisition will provide training to undergraduate and graduate students by using an advanced deep-learning machine for data science and artificial intelligence; this will strengthen the research capacity and opportunities in the area of artificial intelligence at ASU. Meanwhile, it will also facilitate multi-institutional collaborations with surrounding universities. ASU is currently equipped with the following enterprise-level imaging devices: digital cameras (visible band), a near infrared camera, a longwave infrared camera, a midwave infrared camera and a hyperspectral imaging camera. This acquisition will enable us to analyze big data and to create neural network models for our research applications. The acquisition is aimed at enhancing research and education at all levels, especially in areas such as (a) developing neural network models through deep learning, (b) analyzing big data created by multispectral cameras, hyperspectral cameras and drone cameras, (c) enhancing the applications in multispectral image fusion, night vision colorization, and facial recognition, and (d) educating and training students about deep learning and artificial intelligence. Students will receive thorough experience through the funded project by related research and training activities. Research and education seminars will invite college students and high-school students who will be encouraged to major in STEM fields. These students will become the next generation researchers and scientists in branches like national defense.
