Life Sciences Equipment

Abstract

Salish Kootenai College (SKC) is the tribal college of the Flathead Indian Reservation, chartered by the Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes in 1976 to provide educational opportunities for Native Americans from the Flathead Reservation and from throughout the United States. The Department of Life Sciences Cellular and Molecular Biology & Environmental Health provides research opportunities, funded through multiple agencies, for students to engage in novel and ongoing scientific projects. Currently funded and active projects include: (1) The identification of microbes from lakebed soil of Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi river. This project aims to identify microbes that play a role in the bioaccumulation of mercury in fish. (2) Understanding levels and exposure of particulates from wildfires on the Flathead Reservation. (3) Development of a plant model system to study uptake and detection of environmental compounds. (4) Hanta virus testing and study of particles for vaccine development. (5) Gut microbiome analysis to provide the foundation for insights into the impact of sustainable healthy diets in Native American communities. All of the research conducted through the Life Sciences Department relies on critical support equipment that is not funded by existing research grants. Key supportive equipment are working, stable autoclave systems to sterilize biohazard waste, culture media, glassware, and other necessary consumables. The support from the Department of Defense (DoD) for a working autoclave system of Heidolph Laboratory Line autoclaves will enable the continued research established in the Life Sciences Department at Salish Kootenai College on the Flathead Reservation.
