2022 Mechanical Systems in the Quantum Regime GRC & GRS
Abstract
On June 19-24, 2022, the Gordon Research Conference on "Mechanical Systems in Quantum Regime," will be held in Ventura, CA, USA. This meeting will continue the exciting development of this new research field. The topic naturally brings together physicists from a disparate group of sub-disciplines, such as: nano-photonics, mesoscopic electronics, and gravitational-wave detection. In spite of the breadth of subdisciplines, the unification provided by quantum behavior of mechanical oscillators permits genuine depth in the scientific presentations and discussion. As such, many attendees have commented that in this GRC meeting they truly learn about topics with which they are not familiar. A tentative program surrounding this yearÕs topic of ÒQuantum Phononics for Fundamental Measurements and Quantum TechnologyÓ is listed in the main body of this proposal. The quantum behavior of mechanical excitations across many orders of magnitude in length and mass scales has become an exciting branch of quantum science. Today, researchers are formulating experiments that will harness mechanical excitations and phonons in an increasing range of precision measurements, quantum devices, and tests of fundamental physics. This meeting will bring together scientists to discuss the latest experimental and theoretical work on mechanical systems in the quantum regime through lectures and poster sessions. Scientists from a diverse set of fields will present advances in using mesoscopic mechanical devices for quantum information processing and transduction, continuum optomechanics, and fundamental tests with phonons; and elucidate connections to large-scale optical and atomic interferometers and associated fundamental physical measurements.
