Symposium on Heterogeneous Functional Materials for Energy Conversion and Storage 2022

Abstract

The proposed project will organize a symposium on ÒHeterogeneous Functional Materials for Energy Conversion and StorageÓ. This symposium will be held during the 241st Meeting of the Electrochemical Society (ECS) at the Vancouver Convention Center in Vancouver, BC, Canada during May 29 Ð June 2, 2022. Heterogeneous functional materials (HeteroFoaMs) are pervasive in electrochemical devices. These devices consist of multiple materials combined at multiple scales (from atomic to macro) that electrocatalytically react and transport electroactive species during their functional history in a manner that controls their collective performance as a system at the global level. The objective of the symposium will be to provide a forum to discuss the science that controls emergent properties in heterogeneous functional materials as a foundation for design of functional material devices with performance not bounded by constituent properties. This symposium will bring together scientists and engineers across various disciplines to address future challenges in this area. This symposium will provide a setting to catalyze cross-disciplinary collaborations to enable important scientific and technological breakthroughs for our society. The symposium will consist of invited talks along with contributed presentations over several days of technical sessions. The invited speakers will be prominent scientists in their discipline. Invited talks are intended to brief researchers in the latest development in heterogeneous functional materials, and to inspire symposium participants in new research directions and collaboration. The symposium will reimburse the travel expenses of the invited speakers. The symposium will be organized by Wilson K. S. Chiu (University of Connecticut), Fanglin (Frank) Chen (University of South Carolina), Deryn Chu (U. S. Army Research Laboratory), Steven C. DeCaluwe (Colorado School of Mines), Vito Di Noto (Universita degli Studi di Padova), Srikanth Gopalan, (Boston University), Andy M. Herring (Colorado School of Mines), Nian Liu (Georgia Institute of Technology), Robert A. Mantz (U. S. Army Research Office), Torsten Markus (Mannheim University of Applied Sciences), Alice H. Suroviec (Berry College), and Guihua Yu (University of Texas at Austin). Abstracts of all presentations will be published as part of the ECS meeting. All authors accepted for presentation are invited to submit their full text manuscript to a Journal of the Electrochemical Society Focus Issue on Heterogeneous Functional Materials for Energy Conversion and Storage planned to be published after the meeting.
