Support Student Research and Education in Computer Forensics

Abstract

The Department of Computer Systems Technology (CST) at New York City College of Technology (City Tech), the University of New York (CUNY), is seeking funding from DoD to purchase the state of the art equipment and strengthen the support for faculty and student research and education activities in computer forensics. In 2006, our security information laboratory was built with a DoD grant ($150,000) to support three information security courses and student research projects. This lab has been implemented as a CUNY model for an experimentation environment providing hands-on experiences and research in topics related to information security and benefits other CUNYƕs institutions. In 2016, we obtained another DoD grant (~$150,000) to upgrade the lab and department infrastructure. Today, the department of CST has been accredited in the NYC area and currently has about 2,300 (before the pandemic) undergraduate student majors (70% of them are minority), making it the largest computing department of its kind in NYC metropolitan area. The department offers about 37 security class sections in current academic year, which is also the biggest number of security classes offered by an individual institution in NYC area and its neighbors. This existing security laboratory has supported our education and research for more than 15 years. The lab has provided research environment for various student research programs, including the NSF S-STEM program, NSF LS-AMP program, NSF Research Experiment for Undergraduate (REU), and the college Honor Scholar program and Emerging Scholar Student Research Program, etc. In this proposal, we plan to purchase state-of-the-art equipment in our existing lab to support our new course -- computer forensics and student research activity in this field. This security lab will continue to support the four security courses offered by the department and can assist in meeting the national demand for qualified security professionals that can help meet the security challenges facing our national information infrastructure.
