Acquisition of an Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (UPLC-MS) to Enhance Interdisciplinary Research and Education at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore
Abstract
Through this application, we request funds for the acquisition of a Waters Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (UPLC-MS) to enhance interdisciplinary research projects at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. The requested instrument will support synthetic biology and semisynthetic projects for the development of manzamines as anti-malarial and anti-herpes virus drugs. This project is currently led by a multidisciplinary team of UMES faculty with expertise in microbiology, analytical chemistry, synthetic chemistry, entomology, and virology. The requested instrument will also enhance a new antibiotic discovery program led by a team of scientists from the UMES Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Division of Agriculture and Natural Sciences. Other research projects to be enhanced through this acquisition include the development of a bio-film-resistant polymer system and the development of anti-epilepsy drugs. In addition to enhancing research capacity at UMES, the instrument will enhance the quality of education and training in analytical chemistry for UMES undergraduate, graduate students, and high school students from Somerset County.
