Spatial Orientation Modeling Expert Workgroup (SOMEX)
Abstract
In both civil and military aviation, spatial disorientation has remained the most significant cause of fatalities from the time aviation mishap data has first been collected. Mishap boards convened for the purpose of determining causation do not generally have the benefit of questioning aircrew since spatial disorientation mishaps are typically fatal. For the past 50 years civil aviation accident investigation has benefited from the development of cockpit voice recorders and flight data recorders which provide most of the flight parameters to recreate the circumstances to model the mishap. The proposed symposium will bring together the best modelers and perceptual scientists from the international community to compare the various perceptual models using the data recorded from recent mishaps. This Spatial Orientation Modeling Expert Workgroup (SOMEW) will identify weaknesses of current models and make recommendations for future experiments that will expand the envelope of the model. New higher performance military platforms currently under development will have acceleration capabilities that exceed the envelope of the presently available perceptual models. The revised model will be made available to both military and civilian mishap investigation boards to more accurately identify the factors causing spatial disorientation accidents. The perceptual model will provide guidance for the design of the optimal multisensory approach to prevent the occurrence of spatial disorientation. Additionally, the model will provide the opportunity to predict when spatial disorientation is likely to occur, thereby providing interventions involving warning to the pilot or the use of automation to prevent a spatial disorientation mishap.
