Preparative Methods for Responsive Polymers

Abstract

This proposal is for the purchase of an aqueous chromatography instrumentation suite comprised of a size exclusion chromatography system with a multi-angle light scattering detector and refractive index detector as well as a low-pressure preparative gel chromatography system. A major focus in the Gianneschi Lab, and in particular in research supported by the DOD, is the synthesis and characterization of novel polymer systems with numerous unique functions and properties. Of great importance in the understanding of any polymer system is the ability to obtain pure polymer samples and determination of the molar mass and dispersity of those samples. These instruments will provide an opportunity for users (students and postdocs) to gain valuable insight into the quality of the polymers synthesized as they will enable the separation of polymer samples in aqueous solutions and the determination of their molar masses and dispersities.
