Request for Symposium Support ACS POLY Symposium Title: ÒLarge Polymers the Size of Small PolymersÓ

Abstract

The symposium title is a comical description of polymer topologies that result in large macromolecules occupying small hydrodynamic volumes (or vice versa). We expect symposium participants will detail cutting edge synthetic strategies to achieve these unique topologies, as well as the characterization methods and physical properties. Discussion about the challenges of synthesis and characterization and the potential applications of these materials is expected. For example, cyclic polymers, with over 100 years of investigation are only now arriving at the corner of pure and applied chemistry. The difference between a linear and cyclic polymer is only a single chemical bond, yet the effect on properties, especially degradation, can be enormous. This symposium will help integrate the progress of recent pure chemistry with what cyclic polymers (and related topologies) mean for plastics as a whole as we enter the second century of synthetic macromolecules. Rather than a stark choice between the road of pure academic interest and solely applied motivation, this symposium will help topological polymer chemists forge a new, blended path where these smaller than expected molecules can have a larger than expected impact.
