Support of the international conference "Bose-Einstein Condensation 2023 Ð Frontiers in Quantum Gases"

Abstract

This proposal is in support of the international conference "Bose-Einstein Condensation 2023 Ð Frontiers in Quantum Gases", that will be held from September 9th to 15th, 2023 in Sant Feliu de Gu’xols (Spain), in Hotel Eden Roc. The conference is hosted by ICFO Ð The Institute of Photonic Sciences in Castelldefels (Spain) and by the Institute for Laser Physics of the University of Hamburg (Germany). The "Bose-Einstein Condensation" conferences are the most important ones for the physics community in the area of ultracold gases. The series began in 1993 and continues since then at the rhythm of one conference every second year. The event gathers 200 participants from all over the world in a unique mix of senior and junior, experimental and theoretical scientists. Since the 1995 discovery of Bose-Einstein condensation in dilute ultracold gases by Cornell, Ketterle, and Wieman, the field of quantum gases has developed very rapidly in fascinating directions, many of which were not anticipated at the time of this discovery. Spectacular progress both in experiment and theory has led to quantitative many-body physics, establishing a fruitful interface between condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, and high energy physics and making it one of the pillars of the emerging field of quantum simulation and computation. The conference is regularly attended by highly distinguished international scientists from Europe and the US, including several Nobel Prize winners. Since 2007, the conference series takes place in Sant Feliu de Gu’xols (Spain). The conference program includes typically 45 oral presentations (invited and hot topics), including a large fraction of speakers from the US. As an example, the list of US invited speakers in the 2021 edition included Waseem Bakr, Cheng Chin, Eric Cornell, Manuel Endres, Markus Greiner, Jason Ho, Randy Hulet, Wolfgang Ketterle, Mihail Lukin, Allan MacDonald, Ana Mar’a Rey, Dan Stamper-Kurn, Jun Ye, and Martin Zwierlein. The US Air Force and Army support is needed in order to ensure the participation of a large and diverse group of senior and young invited speakers, and, in particular, to help foster the exchange of scientific information among young scientists. It will be used to support the costs of invited speakers, of the venue, and to facilitate participation of younger participants. More generally, this support will contribute to a number of areas vital to science and technology in the US and in Europe that are becoming also increasingly important in the field of Quantum Science and Technology.
