2.5D Photonic Integration for Imaging and Information Processing

Abstract

The aim of this proposed DoD Research and Education Program (REP) is to establish a program to enhance the research and educational activities in two-and-half-dimensional (2.5D) photonic integration for photonic integrated circuits (PICs), beyond the-state-of-the-art planar integration in CREOL, The College of Optics and Photonics at the University of Central Florida (UCF). Integrated photonics technologies have been playing a significant role in acquiring, transmitting, and processing information, and hold the promise to achieve unprecedented speed and power efficiency. Our research activities encompass 2 major areas: (1) Fundamental research in design and fabrication methodologies for 2.5D integration of PICs, particularly in understanding the energy efficiency and exploring novel system designs; (2) functional integration of heterogeneous PICs of multiple scales and demonstration of photonic-integrated system for computing, imaging and information processing. Optics and photonics are pervasive technologies that play important roles in several Department of Defense (DoD)-funded research programs at UCF. The capability to harness the complementary functionalities of heterogeneous PICs through direct photonic integration will become a key part of the Photonics Science and Engineering degree program at UCF, co-administered by CREOL and the College of Engineering. In additional to the proposed research activites, our educational programs aim to enhance the pedagogy of device development for the next generation of information technologies. Due to the significant advancements in data science and AI/machine learning in recent years, many talented students are attracted to disciplines that place more emphasis on software. Through our undergraduate/graduate research program and curriculum development, our program will equip students with the knowleges for next-generation information acquisition and processing. UCF is located in Orange County, the ninth-largest school district in the nation, with one of the most diverse student bodies. Through the proposed REP, we will further improve the quality of our outreach programs and attract students, particularly from minorities and under-represented groups, to STEM-related fields.
