51st International School & Conference on the Physics of Semiconductors "Jaszowiec 2023"

Abstract

The International School & Conference on the Physics of Semiconductors "Jaszowiec" is an annual, week-long meeting which brings together prominent experts from a broad field of semiconductor physics. Last year, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of this conference, and in 2023 ÒJaszowiecÓ will begin a new half-century. Traditionally, the conference is held in a small holiday resort in the south of Poland. Currently, ÒJaszowiecÓ is the largest conference in the field of condensed matter physics in Central Europe (about 250 participants, about half of whom are students). Both the ÒJaszowiecÓ School and the Conference traditionally bring together outstanding world experts working in foreign research centers (in 2022 they were from 16 countries), or in Poland. The official language of the conference is English, and thanks to ÒJaszowiecÓ multinational character, it enables and stimulates the exchange of experiences and networking at the international and national level. In 2022, we celebrated the jubilee, 50th "Jaszowiec", and in 2023 we will start a new half-century. The topics of the conference include: semiconductor nanostructures (quantum dots, quantum wells and nanowires), graphene and other two-dimensional (2D) materials, topological states of matter, spintronics and spin phenomena in semiconductors, quantum optics and nanophotonics, quantum computing and quantum information processing, synthesis and characterization of semiconductor materials, optical, magnetic and transport properties, defects and impurities in solids, electron devices. The tutorial session (School), addressed mainly to MSc students, PhD students and young scientists, was established in 1992, and since then precedes the Conference. The ÒJaszowiecÓ Advisory Committee consists of 11 experts from leading centers for the physics of semiconductors in Europe, North America and Japan. The Program Committee is composed of experts from Polish co-organizing institutions. In 2023, the School (June 17-18) and the Conference (June 19-23) will be held in a contact form. During the School, five (1.5 hours long) lectures, providing an introductory overview to some of the Conference topics are planned. The program of the Conference includes 15 invited lectures (80% of which are given by foreign guests), over 30 oral and about 100 poster presentations. The meeting will offer a very good opportunity for the transfer of knowledge between excellent scientists participating in ÒJaszowiecÓ Conference and students, also to a wider group of scientists related to U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) through the conference materials. The Conference Program and abstracts will be published on the official Conference website (http://jaszowiec.edu.pl in May 2023. The conference proceedings will be published in the special issue of Acta Physica Polonica A and/or ACS Omega (arrangements in progress) at the end of 2023. Organizers of the International School & Conference on the Physics of Semiconductors "Jaszowiec 2023": Ð Institute of Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences Ð Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw Ð Institute of High Pressure Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences Ð Wroclaw University of Science and Technology Ð Lukasiewicz Research Network - Institute of Microelectronics and Photonics In the case of previous ÒJaszowiecÓ conferences, we had the honor of being supported by US Army related organizations in 2008-2022. However, organizing the upcoming conference in 2023 might be a challenge. This is due to high inflation and the war beyond our eastern border. These factors caused a significant increase in prices in Poland and the accompanying weaker financing of science, because significant founds must be allocated to defense. Therefore, in order to maintain the continuity of tradition and allow many young scientists to participate in the "Jaszowiec 2023" Conference, we dare to apply for funding increased to USD 15,000 this year.
