6th International Conference on Microbiome Engineering

Abstract

The International Conference on Microbiome Engineering (ICME) connects experts from academia and industry to share the field?s most recent developments and the science and technology needed to enable microbiome engineering. This includes genetically engineered organisms that function within microbiomes, control of microbiomes through environmental modifications, and inference of engineering principles for microbiomes from analysis of defined and natural microbiomes. The conference is unique and distinct from other microbiome conferences in that specifically highlights the integration of engineering design principles with microbiome research. The conference integrates synthetic biology, systems biology, microbial ecology, and bioinformatics across a range of application spaces from the environment, to manufacturing, to food, to human health. Our proposal for ICME 2023 includes a new vision for engagement of trainees and early career scientists from backgrounds that are underrepresented minorities (URMs) in STEM. The ICME Fellows Program will provide full subsidy and enhanced research visibility for early career URM scientists. We believe this program can readily become a model for other conferences and research communities. The goal of this funding proposal is to increase diversity at ICME and to provide professional development, training, and networking opportunities to underrepresented early career scientists in the field of microbiome engineering. To achieve this goal, we will use this funding support to initiate the ICME Fellows Program. ICME Fellows are underrepresented minority (URM) trainee (student or postdoc) scientists. They will be selected from applications received. The ICME Fellows would receive a full fee waiver plus full travel expenses (up to a total of $2,500), and would be provided an oral presentation opportunity during the conference. If approved, funds from government agencies, including ARL, will be used to create a total class of 6 - 8 ICME Fellows. These are awards that can be showcased on CVs and listed among awards and honors, which will help the future careers of underrepresented trainees in the field of microbiome engineering. ICME Fellows ? and the funding agency support for these Fellows ? will be highlighted in the opening and closing remarks for the conference.
