2024 Multifunctional Materials and Structures Gordon Research Conference

Abstract

The Gordon Research Conference on Multifunctional Materials and Structures is a leading technical forum on recent developments in the field, bringing together a vibrant international community of scientists and engineers from a wide range of disciplines encompassing physics, mechanics, materials science, engineering science, chemistry, biology, mathematics and computational science and engineering to discuss recent advances and unpublished research, spawn new ideas, and foster productive interdisciplinary collaborations. The requested conference funding aims at providing support for registration fees and partial travel costs to invited speakers and discussion leaders in order to facilitate their participation to the 2024 Gordon Research Conference on Multifunctional Materials and Structures with the theme Discovery of Reconfigurable, Hybrid and Sustainable Materials. Special emphasis will be given to conference registration and travel support for women, minorities, and underrepresented groups in engineering and science. The vibrant and diverse Multifunctional Materials and Structures community of junior and senior researchers from Universities, National Laboratories and Industry from around the globe has established a catalyzing role in ground-breaking developments in a broad spectrum of emerging technical fields. The inaugural GRS on Multifunctional Materials and Structures will also debut on the day prior to the 2024 GRC, and will be exclusively organized and attended by graduate students, post-doctoral scholars and junior researchers. The rich program of the 2024 GRC, comprised of stimulating lectures, in-depth discussions, poster-sessions, power-hour activities and group social activities, aims at cultivating productive discussions and nucleating new and innovative ideas for technical and scientific breakthroughs in (a) material and structural multifunctionality, shape reconfigurability and adaptivity to diverse environments, (b) synthesis, design and optimization of hybrid multifunctional materials through theory and recent developments in machine learning and data sciences, (c) irregular materials, reaction-driven materials and dynamic bonding, (d) material regeneration and sustainability. The conference will address key scientific issues and bottlenecks on making major advances in these innovative research areas, with potential impacts to a broad range of civilian and defense applications.
