Exploring the Role of Cluster Reactivity in Destroying Chemical Warfare Agents

Abstract

Funds are requested to purchase an ARGUS CU hemispherical energy analyzer and its xray source. The acquisition of this equipment will lead to a major leap forward in the x-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) capabilities of our surface deposition apparatus and thus in our research. The ARGUS CU is needed both because of its excellent detection sensitivity (due to its multi-channel detector) and also because of its resulting greatly enhanced resolution. Both enhanced sensitivity and resolution are sorely needed in our challenging experiments. The ARGUS CU system is also equipped with ?Snapshot?, along with necessary electronics and software. The ?Snapshot? mode of operation will facilitate the measurement x-ray photoelectron spectra as a function of temperature. This is because ?Snapshot? can take spectra rapidly as the sample temperature is rising. Obtaining these components will enhance the crucial x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) capabilities of our cluster-deposition, surface analytical apparatus, thus enabling revolutionary advances in our work.
