High-Performance Computing for Research and Education in Human-Guided Learning
Abstract
Developing robotic systems that can learn from diverse human experiences to gain human-like decision/autonomy intelligence is essential towards their applications in complex environments, especially for many modern DoD systems due to budget and manpower constraints. Despite some important processes towards AI, robotics, and human-guided learning, one key gap is that the developed technologies are not realizable and hence untrustworthy in real-world applications without comprehensive tests and evaluation in complex environments. The objectives of the project are to (1) acquire high-performance computing equipment, namely, Lambda Hyperplane 8-H100 server, to enable us conduct diverse tests and evaluation of human-guided learning algorithms in complex environments, (2) create new education values via new course materials and projects, and (3) promote extensive STEM outreach activities and student entrepreneurship. The success of the project is expected to fulfill the needs at the U.S. Army and DoD by providing verifiable and trustworthy human-level intelligent robotic systems that can learn from humans and the education/training of next-generation STEM students with both technical and hands-on skills. The novelty of this project is the synergy of the state-of-the-art research and high-performance computing to offer unprecedented value in knowledge discovery, STEM education, and workforce development.
