Lightweight M3A1 Recoilless Rifle (Army)

Abstract

The M3 Carl Gustaf 84 millimeter (mm) Recoilless Rifle is a reliable, battle-proven, reusable shoulder-fired weapon system first introduced to the Army by FCT in 1991. This M3A1 project will eliminate six pounds (28 percent) from the existing weapon by replacing the existing steel tube with a titanium alloy tube, along with other components (bolt, trigger, venturi, and ancillary parts) without changing the firing procedures, operations or ammunition. Since no operational characteristics will be changed, this low-risk approach will produce a lighter weight 84mm shoulder-fired weapon for less cost and time than normally required to test and qualify a new weapon system.
