Drugs to Prevent/Treat Parasitic Diseases
Abstract
This effort selects promising anti-parasitic drug candidates for treating malaria and leishmaniasis (a disease transmitted by sand flies) for testing in humans, prepares data packages required for FDA approval of testing in humans, and conducts that testing. Studies have shown that the malaria parasite can become resistant to existing drugs, which makes it necessary to continually research new and more effective treatments. In FY17 this research area and the Vaccines for Prevention of Malaria research area are merged into one task area titled Advanced Technology Research on drugs and vaccines against parasitic diseases.
