Materials Modeling for Force Protection
Abstract
The long-term goal of this task is to develop a structural ceramic composite that could replace steel and aluminum for most applications at one third the weight. To accomplish this goal, a technical ceramic such as silicon carbide will have to be improved five-fold in tensile strength and fracture toughness.
