Institute #1 – National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute (America Makes)

Abstract

Additive manufacturing (i.e., “3D printing”) is a process of joining materials to make objects from 3D model data, usually layer upon layer, as opposed to subtractive manufacturing methodologies such as traditional machining. Advanced additive manufacturing will benefit the DoD by enabling lifecycle cost savings and enhanced capabilities, including moving toward “focused logistics” – getting the right part in the right place in just the right time – for wartime and humanitarian missions using local supply chains. This MII was established in 2012, with cooperative agreement funding included in this budget through FY 2015, and DoD program management costs included in subsequent fiscal years until all R&D projects, reporting, and fiduciary responsibilities are completed.
