2009QRF0006_Standoff Terahertz Human Threat Identification (Phase II)

Abstract

The goal of this effort was to develop an advanced sensor using terahertz (THz) radiation that can detect trace residues of explosives embedded on the hair, skin, and clothing of humans at standoff distances. The objectives of the 3-year Lincoln effort included the following: 1. Measure and characterize trace explosive residues in the hair, skin and clothing of bomb handlers. 2. Assess the feasibility of THz radiation for sensing trace explosives on humans. 3. Build a prototype THz sensor with 20 m standoff range, and with sensitivity sufficient to detect trace explosives embedded in the hair, skin and clothing of humans. 4. Assist the transfer of technology developed under this effort to industry for productizing the instrument for field use.
