Coating for Howitzer Breech-Spindles (Army)

Abstract

Coating for Howitzer Breech-Spindles will test and compare several different coating and refurbishment technologies for the 155mm Howitzer-Breech Spindles. These new coating technologies will mitigate wear and corrosion problems and extend the useful life of the spindles. The lab will apply advanced mature Physical Vapor Deposition, Electro-less Nickel, and Super-finishing technologies to coat and refurbish the 155mm Howitzer breech-spindles. The lab will conduct analytical and fire testing to validate the new process, and develop a prototype for transition to production. The objective is to replace the electroplated chrome presently used with a product that provides improved durability, sustainability, environmental benefits, and significant cost savings.
