AN-M8A1 Obscuration Grenade

Abstract

This effort supports the Type Classification/Production Prove Out of an improved obscurant grenade that provides the warfighter with screening performance of the legacy AN-M8 smoke grenade without exposing Soldiers to the toxic effects of that legacy grenade's Hexachloroethane smoke. Use of the AN-M8 Obscuration Grenade has been discontinued inside and outside the Continental United States (CONUS/OCONUS) due to restrictions on the use of Hexachloroethane on the battlefield. The M83 training smoke grenade is currently used in lieu of the AN-M8 in both training and tactical operations. However, since the M83 does not give screening performance comparable to the legacy AN-M8 grenade, the current warfighter strategy is to use two M83 Obscuration Grenades in lieu of a single AN-M8.
