Earth System Prediction Capability (ESPC)

Abstract

The Navy Earth System Prediction Capability (ESPC) program will provide a more accurate, longer range, global ocean and atmospheric forecast system for decision support to DoD Maritime Operations through the development of an integrated, coupled atmosphere, ocean, sea ice, land and near-space prediction system with improved deterministic and probabilistic skill over the current operational modeling suite. It will result in increased accuracy for lead times of 1-30 days as well as a new capability for accurate forecasts in the Arctic at all lead times. Additionally it will seek to develop more computationally efficient environmental prediction for emerging architectures and provide Navy R&D support to the National ESPC. Funding increase from FY 2017 to FY 2018 due to a increased investment in forecast projections for land, sea, ice and middle atmosphere modeling.
