A STRAIN-ENERGY EXPRESSION FOR THIN CYLINDRICAL SHELLS

Abstract

The strain energy for a thin cylindrical shell was derived by integrating Flugge's expressions for the strains (W. Flugge, Statik und Dynamik der Schalen, Edwards Bros. Inc., Ann Arbor, 1943) and approximating logarithmic terms by expanding in series of ascending powers and neglecting terms above the cubic. The differences from previously obtained expressions in the cubic terms are pointed out. The fundamental disagreements in the previous expressions are discussed.
