PROGRESS REPT. FOR JANUARY 1953
Abstract
A study was conducted on the histological effects of a tryptoph ane- deficient diet on the long bones, jaws, and teeth of rats. After a 3-wk depletion period the rats averaged 48 g, whereas control rats averaged 120 g. The mandibular condyles showed a narrowing to the cartilage. No molar or incisor changes were evident after 3 wk, but after a 7-wk depletion period hypocalcification of the dentin of the incisors was indicated by the increased number of interglobular spaces. The effect of previous dietary deficiency on the bone in relation to stress is being studied with special orthodontic appliances place on the incisors of animals with repleted diets. The effects of a lysine- deficiency diet are being studied.
