THE REINFORCEMENT TO FULL STRENGTH OF A THIN SLAB WITH A SLIT

Abstract

The problem is considered of a thin slab, with a centered slit parallel to an edge of the slab, which is subjected to uniform tensile stresses across its edges. The slab material is assumed to be perfectly plastic and to satisfy Tresca's yield condition. A square reinforcement is designed so that the slit slab will not yield under any load which could be supported by the same slab without a slit.
